Current Choices for Digital Publishing in 2018

Current Choices for Digital Publishing in 2018

Thursday, 10:15 am – 11:00 am

InDesign isn’t just for print. It can be used to design many types of digital output to be viewed on desktop and laptop computers, tablets, phones, and E-readers. But how do you know which output type is best for your audience and your content?

In this session, we’ll examine 7 different digital publishing options: HTML, Mobile apps, Mobile Web apps, Reflowable EPUB, Fixed-Layout EPUB, Publish Online, and PDF.

You will learn:

  • How to choose the “right” solution for your needs
  • The level of effort needed to create each type of output
  • Which type of output can be accessed by the widest audience
  • Which types of output can include rich media and interactivity

Lies Your Printer Has Told You

Lies Your Printer Has Told You

Thursday, 2:15 pm – 3:00 pm

Prepare yourself for some seriously good, “real world” print advice you can take home and use today. In this session we’ll dispel the many myths you’ll encounter in prepress and print situations, such as:

  • “you should just convert all your text to outlines”
  • “you should just choose “Press Quality” when you make a PDF and everything will be fine”
  • “you should always make a PDF with crop and bleed marks”
  • “you should convert everything to CMYK first”

Make a Mobile App with InDesign

Make a Mobile App with InDesign

Friday, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Creating a mobile app can be expensive, usually requiring custom development or a subscription to a service such as Twixl, AEM (DPS), or Aquafadas.

Or, you can attend this session to learn how to build a complete “content-first” mobile app yourself for less than $200! We will use InDesign, in5, and Adobe PhoneGap Build. This method works well for projects such as travel guides, “how-to” apps, or interactive annual reports.

You will learn how to:

  • Identify if your project is a good fit for this type of workflow
  • Set up InDesign files for mobile content creation
  • Add interactivity to InDesign files
  • Export HTML output from InDesign using the in5 plug-in
  • Use Adobe PhoneGap Build (included with Creative Cloud) to build apps for iOS and Android that include your InDesign-built HTML content
  • Enroll as an Apple and Android developer and submit your app to App Stores

Better Ways to Work with Editors and Writers

Better Ways to Work with Editors and Writers

Wednesday, 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm

At work, designers and editors are all so busy getting their projects out the door, there’s little time to look up and see what’s new out there. If you’re still flowing in badly-formatted Word documents into InDesign, fighting them into submission, then circulating umpteen PDF layout proofs to umpteen people, this is the session for you!

  • Best practices for managing Acrobat comments
  • Bringing proof comments directly into InDesign
  • Using linked Word files for fast, round-trip copyediting with WordsFlow
  • Collaborative cloud-based editing with DocsFlow: Link shared Google Docs to InDesign
  • How InCopy, Word, and InDesign work together in a local or remote workflow

Anne-Marie’s specialty is helping publishing teams streamline their workflows with low-cost, easy-to-adopt solutions. You’ll be so encouraged and energized by what she shows in her session that you’ll be fixing your own workflows as soon as you get back to the office.

Learn How to Learn: Mastering InDesign (and all your other apps)

Learn How to Learn:
Mastering InDesign (and all your other apps)

Wednesday, 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Everyone learns Adobe applications differently. Where some designers like one-on-one training, others love watching video tutorials. Some prefer learning at seminars or conferences! All of these are valid ways to learn InDesign (or any Adobe app).
But there are additional techniques you can use to learn the deepest secrets of InDesign entirely on your own. And in many ways, these are the best methods of all. In this short session, you’ll learn about:
  • Building a spectrum of projects
  • Play: The hidden trick for uncovering gems
  • How to figure out how an application “thinks”
  • Making the most of cross-application techniques
  • Thinking outside the box
