Lists and Numbering

Wednesday, 10:15 am – 10:45 am

You’ve found the buttons to apply bullets and/or numbering to your lists in InDesign. But after they’re applied, you may be clicking around trying to control placement, style, color and manage if a list starts at “1” or annoyingly continues from a previous numbered list on another page. In this quick, to the point session, we’ll add custom bullets, make a character style to apply a color and control the bullet distance from the text and the frame. Then, we’ll number paragraphs, control what the number looks like, and we’ll make awesome paragraph styles to apply a number “1” to the first paragraph then “2, 3 etc”. to the rest of the list in a couple clicks. A must have for a training manual.

We’ll cover:

  • Tricks and essential tips for applying bullets and numbering to all your lists
  • Understand the new feature “Space Between Paragraphs using Same Style”
  • Create a Character Style to color a bullet, or change a font
  • Number your figures or graphics with consecutively numbered captions

Who’s Invited: All conference attendees, speakers, sponsors, paparazzi, etc.

Cost: Free!

We’re putting on our annual fun “IGNITE”-style show and need your help! Do you have …

  • An unusual design or production-related technique that you use?
  • A “from the design trenches” anecdote to share — funny or serious?
  • Some hard-won lessons you’ve learned? Or wish your clients would learn…
  • Tips for getting the most out of a conference?
  • An incredibly complex table you created, or special effect, or the world’s best workspace?
  • Advice for designers or computer users or ?
  • Something else InDesign- or Photoshop-related that you’re passionate about?

Yes? Then take this opportunity to share it with your colleagues in 5 minutes or less! Only 12 spots are available, and it’s first-come first-serve, so don’t wait till the last minute. We’ll confirm via email with our final roster of 12 Ignite presenters and 2 alternates by Friday, May 31. If you’re not sure of a topic yet, but definitely want to do this thing, then fill out the form with a placeholder idea NOW to save your spot! You can fill it out again later (before May 31) once you’ve decided on a topic.

Rules (for audience members)

  1. Relax, have fun, and enjoy.
  2. Be supportive of your fellow attendees!

Rules (for presenters)

Sign-up for your slot below, but first read the rules:

  1. This event is mainly for attendees: No prior speaking experience required. The newbier the better. The audience is very supportive, not to worry.
  2. Create a series of exactly 20 pages or slides in landscape format, which you will export to PDF and we’ll project it on screen during your talk. The first one’s your opener, the last one is your closer. Email the 20-page PDF to us or bring it with you on a USB Flash drive. Keep the slides simple!
  3. Content: Your topic must be about something related to the field of design or graphic production — tools, projects, tips, rants. It’s okay to be funny, but keep it clean and appropriate. Please don’t use this as a sales presentation or portfolio review. Violators will get “the hook”! If in doubt, ask Anne-Marie (amarie@cpn.co), your friendly MC, beforehand.
  4. Be prepared to talk about your topic for 5 minutes while we project your slides on the screen.
  5. The slides will auto-advance every 15 seconds! That’s the Ignite rule. And what makes it fun for the audience, too! 20 slides x 15 seconds = 5 minutes.
  6. When your 5 minutes are up, take a bow, enjoy the applause, and hand the mic back to the MC.

That’s all… nice and simple! Fill out the form below to sign up for fame, fortune, and hilarity. (And did we mention all IGNITE speakers earn a special conference keepsake for their efforts?)

Need to produce 50+ different books per year, in five different output formats? Creating digital or print catalogs? Making custom bespoke documents for thousands of people? • Automation with precision
  • Managing huge amounts of data efficiently
  • Creating PDFs on the fly, without InDesign or any other traditional apps

Object Styles: Your Secret Weapon for Productivity

Tuesday, 2:15 pm – 3:00 pm

You ask, why would I bother to create and use an object style? My answer: why would you not?! Object styles tell a frame how to look — stroke & fill, effects, size, position, etc and can also format what’s inside, both text and graphics. Object styles can save you an enormous amount of time applying formatting and especially when you or the client makes a change. We’ll create an Object Style for a simple photo frame, then step it up to create an organizational chart, complete with paragraph styles and box sizes, making the frames easy to create and modify. We’ll explore cool positioning tricks, as well as how to apply effects and text wrap and save them all in an Object Style.

In this session you’ll learn:

  • How to make and apply an Object Style
  • Resize the photo that’s inside a frame
  • Apply text frame attributes and multiple paragraph styles in one click
  • Anchor a frame into text, then use an Object Style to precisely position it
  • Cool tricks & shortcuts for creating and applying an Object Style
  • You’ll leave wondering why you haven’t created more Object Styles!
